Canadarm2 is a space robotic arm developed by MDA Space for the International Space Station. MDA identifies it as the second generation of the Canadarm family, installed on the station in 2001 for spacecraft capture and other station operations.
Canadarm2 launched to the International Space Station on STS-100 in April 2001 as the Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS).
Canadarm2 captures visiting vehicles, moves equipment and astronauts' payloads, and supports ISS assembly and maintenance operations.
Canadarm2 can traverse the station truss inchworm-style using Power Data Grapple Fixtures and works with the Mobile Base System and Dextre manipulator.
MDA Space (formerly MDA) built Canadarm2 as a larger, self-relocatable successor to the Space Shuttle Canadarm, with seven motorized joints and Latching End Effectors at both ends.
Canadarm2 is expected to support berthing of future Axiom Space Station modules to the ISS.
