Canadarm was a Canadian robotic arm used on U.S. Space Shuttle missions from 1981 to 2011. Developed through the National Research Council of Canada and Spar Aerospace Limited, it was manipulated by astronauts to handle payloads and support shuttle operations.
Canadarm was developed in response to NASA's need for a robotic arm for the Space Shuttle. The Government of Canada provided the first flight hardware to NASA as Canada's contribution to the shuttle project.
Canadarm was designed to fit on the Space Shuttle and be manipulated by astronauts inside the shuttle.
Five Canadarms were built. The system completed its 90th and final flight in July 2011, when the Space Shuttle program ended.
The National Research Council of Canada and Toronto-based Spar Aerospace Limited began developing the arm in the early 1970s. The completed Shuttle Remote Manipulator System was shipped to NASA in 1981.
