da Vinci 5

History

Intuitive announced FDA 510(k) clearance for da Vinci 5 on 14 March 2024, describing it as the outcome of more than a decade of research, design, development and testing. The system builds on the da Vinci Xi design, which had been used in more than 7 million procedures at the time of clearance.

da Vinci 5 is a robotic-assisted surgical system developed by Intuitive.

Development

Da Vinci 5 includes more than 150 design innovations over da Vinci Xi. Its Force Feedback technology measures push and pull forces at the instrument tip in three dimensions and transmits them to the surgeon hand controllers, with four sensitivity settings. Instrument-tip forces are recorded in Newtons whether or not feedback is enabled. Force Feedback instruments are optional and are cleared for the same procedures as da Vinci Xi except pediatric and cardiac procedures.

Future Roadmap

Intuitive has stated it intends to pursue removal of the current Force Feedback contraindications, and positions the captured force data as a new data stream for surgical data science and future AI-supported analysis.
