SoftBank Pepper — pioneering social service robot at consumer/enterprise scale.
Pepper is a semi-humanoid social robot developed by Aldebaran Robotics (formerly SoftBank Robotics Europe). It was designed for emotion-aware interaction in retail, hospitality, education, and research settings.
Pepper was introduced in Tokyo on 5 June 2014 by SoftBank founder Masayoshi Son and deployed in SoftBank Mobile stores in Japan. Production was paused in June 2021 amid weak demand after an estimated 27,000 units were manufactured.
Aldebaran positioned Pepper to facilitate relationships, entertainment, and human connection rather than as a domestic utility robot.
Pepper was deployed in banks, airports, restaurants, and research projects including the EU CARESSES culturally competent care-robot study.
Pepper was developed by Aldebaran Robotics with Foxconn manufacturing involvement. Its interaction stack built on emotion recognition from facial expressions and voice tones.
Aldebaran entered receivership in 2025; future Pepper hardware development is uncertain.
